Emotional Intelligence

2022. We are a quarter of the way through it. Has it been the year you thought it was going to be? I will be the first to admit that my 2022 started great. I had my goals planned out and I felt like I was on a roll. Then life happened. There was nothing drastic that changed but mentally something changed. For the last three months, I have felt the struggle. Struggle at work, at home, in my business, and mentally. My motivation to get out there and conquer my dreams had dwindled. BUT, I don’t give up that easy.

I am always reading, every single day, even if I only get 15 minutes in, I am reading something. Recently I read Emotional Intelligence by Brandon Goleman. For me, this book was a fast read, it was just a little over 100 pages. The message was one that I needed to hear though.

I knew I was an emotional person and there are days when my emotions get the best of me. I wanted to give this book a shot because I thought maybe it would help me learn to get a handle on my emotions. Little did I know.

One of the components of Emotional Intelligence is Self-Awareness. “If you pay attention to your emotions, you’ll be better placed to understand why you feel those emotions in the first place.” The 1st of the many light bulbs to go off. I know I get emotional, but I had not been taking the time to understand where those emotions were coming from.

Tips for improving your self-awareness.

  1. Set aside time for introspection – look at the root causes of your thoughts and emotions
  2. Shift your mindset
  3. Practice Meditation and mindfulness

Another Component of Emotional Intelligence is Motivation. “When you are fueled from within, you are more likely to pursue things that fulfill you and make you happy.” Brandon also listed out the following to help boost morale, which I needed!

  1. Set goals that excite you
  2. Put a reward system in place
  3. Write your goals down
  4. Break them into smaller manageable goals

Needless to say, I rewrote all my goals and put that reward system into place. These were two of the many nuggets that I grabbed out of this book. There is also a quiz in the back where you can see where you rate on the Emotional Intelligence scale. Sometimes it is very hard to hear, learn, or read things that we need to improve on. All that is part of the journey though. If you aren’t trying to learn what you need to improve on then are you really growing?

1883 – If You Aren’t Watching it, You Should

1883. Can we just take a minute and acknowledge how talented Taylor Sheridan is as a writer? I really want you to stop and think about this for a minute. A grown man writing from the perspective of a teenage girl and nailing it. Not only nailing it but literally knocking it out of the park. Can you imagine how creative you have to be to do that? Every single episode, I am blown away.

Yes, I know that men have feelings too, but to understand the capacity of emotions that a teenage girl is going through? That is something spectacular. Watching Isabel May (Elsa), I swear I have gone through every single one of those emotions.

This series has captured my soul. I thought I had an old soul before, but now I know for sure. My imaginations of being back in that time have increased and become more curious. My soul pulls to being there every episode that I watch. To truly live that free. With Wide-open spaces as far as you can see. Living off the land, watching the sunrise and the sunset every day. To go against the grain and the norms of society. I think that is what I love most about Isabel’s character. She creates her own path in the world. She doesn’t do what “society,” thinks she should do.

To be able to live that free. Without the daily hustle and bustle of life as we know it now. That is a powerful thing, my friends. Granted, there are some things that I would miss. Indoor Plumbing and Hot water are two that I can name right off the bat. Oh, and I would definitely be one of those ladies that wore pants!

I am grateful for this series. It has been a whirlwind of emotions so far but I have loved every moment of it. I am pretty sure I have cried every episode as well. From Taylor’s writing to the actors playing the cast, it has been an incredible series. Thank you, Taylor Sheridan, for speaking to the soul of this lil ole girl from Texas.

Today She is Another Year Older

“Wanderlust consumed her; foreign hearts and exotic minds compelled her. She had a gypsy soul and a vibrant hope for the unknown.” D. Marie

Today she turns another year older. Another year of continued growth. Another year of becoming wiser. Another year of chasing her dreams.

Today she is another year older. She is a fierce soul who loves with all her heart. She has wisdom beyond her years. She is constantly learning, breaking down the barriers that surround her. Music speaks to her soul. Books encourage her dreams and ambitions. She has a knack for learning. For happiness and peace. Her soul is a wanderer, waiting for the next adventure.

She has learned to see others. To listen. To see the world from their perspective. She shows up every day. To be the best version of how she sees her future self. She never stops trying to improve. Growth is her journey.

She makes mistakes. She falls backward but she always gets back up. She is grateful for her journey. Her journey is what got her here. She has owned that path, her future looks bright. She and only she can write her story. And oh what a beautiful story it will be.

She continues to choose her journey while being unapologetically her.

You know someone just like her. You could be her. Listen to your soul. Question things. Journal. Breath in the fresh air. Practice gratitude. Show up every day. Be authentic to yourself. It is okay to go against the grain. Search for Answers. Dig in Deep. Face the scary stuff. Be true to you.
